Act now to take advantage of EPAct
The Energy Policy Act of 2005 (EPAct) offers federal tax credits and deductions for energy-efficient appliances and products. This legislation can help make the case for lighting upgrades because it speeds the return on investment.
Tax deductions for commercial buildings can be as high as $1.80 per square foot. Owners and designers of new buildings can qualify when the space exceeds ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2001.
The deduction can equal the cost of the items installed during construction, with a max of $1.80 per square foot. A partial deduction is also available for HVAC, lighting and building envelope. These can be as much as $.60 per square foot. Certain light levels and lighting control requirements must be met to qualify for the partial lighting deduction.
Public entites, like schools and government offices, can not apply but the deduction may be allocated to the person primarily responsible for designing the property. You should always contact your tax advisor before making any tax-related decisions.
