Vary the speed to crank up the savings
Commercial settings are full of energy saving opportunities, particularly those with machinery. Motor-driven machines often operate at full speed even when it’s not necessary. Variable frequency drives (VFDs) can help manage this energy waste. EC&M, a technical publication for electricians says, “Modern VFDs are affordable and reliable, have flexibility of control, and offer significant electrical energy savings through greatly reduced electric bills.”
These drives vary the speed of the motor so that it doesn't work at full speed when it is unnecessary to do so. Variable frequency drives are ideal for pumps and fans, but can also work with conveyors, injection molding machines, air compressors and chillers.
Many utility companies provide rebates for installing variable frequency drives. Check with your local provider for more information.
